1. Get a primary and secondary keyword
From your keyword research, select your primary (which is your best choice) and secondary keyword that you want to use on a web page that you want to rank higher.
2. Use the primary keyword on your title
When a search query is done, search engines look for the title of webpages that matches the search and include them on the list of results. If you can, make sure that the primary keyword is located near the beginning of the title because if you put it somewhere near the end, most SEO experts believe that it gives lesser value to search engines. In addition, try to keep your title within 50 characters in length and make it descriptive, if not interesting. Always remember that the title is part of what a user sees on SERP. So if you want your web page to stand out among the list, use a compelling title.
3. Use both primary and secondary keyword on the description tag.
The description tag is where you describe your page in a few words read by search engines to understand what your web page is all about. When someone visits your web page, they don’t see the description tag, they only see the title and your article. If you are using WordPress, there are plugins available, such as SEO In One, that will automatically set up your description tag.
Most often, search engines look at the description tag to see if it matches the user’s query and put your web page on SERP list, if it does. The description tag should only be around 165 characters long. In addition, remember that aside from the title, it is also another portion of your web site that shows on SERP. So make it enticing to grab a user’s attention.
4. If you can, use both primary and secondary keywords on the first paragraph of your article.
There is much debate about this. But most SEO experts believe that search engines put greater weight on the words within the first paragraph to analyze its importance in relation to a particular search. It is widely acknowledged that an article usually starts with a summary of what the write up is all about. Therefore, whatever keywords that search engine crawlers find on the first paragraph of an article would tell what the page is all about.
5. Use the keywords on your headings and subheadings
Again, a normal article has headings and subheadings where the words used briefly describe what the next paragraph contains.
6. Use keywords as anchor text
When you are referring another web page to your reader, you are providing added value to your web site and better service to your visitor if you can briefly describe the content of that page by using keywords as anchor text. In addition, by using keywords as anchor texts, instead of “click here” or” link”, search engines are able to tell what the other web pages all about.
