That’s how SEO was introduced. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a method or process of increasing the visibility of your website on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, and all others.
When you search for any information using the Internet, you must be using Google or Yahoo. You only need to type a certain word, which is called keyword, in the search box, click on Search, and voila! You
will be confronted with a list of websites that mention the keywords you typed in the search box. That list is called search engine results page (SERP). Among the list, which one do you click on instantly?
- According to Eye-tracking Study, Enquiro, Did-it and Eyetools in 2005, 75% of search engine users click on the first link among the list.
- Penn State University also made their own research and found out that a typical web user will only visit the first three links.
- More often than not, Internet user wouldn’t go beyond the top 30 SERP (Forrester research).
Now, that’s how important SEO is for Internet marketing campaign. You want your website to rank as high as possible to maximize your business potential.

Search Engine Optimization – SEO
As mentioned above, when you try to search for something on the Internet, the search engine gives you a list of relevant results. The order of links or websites on SERP is called page rank or ranking which is important for Internet marketing as Internet users tend to visit the first few results. Search engine optimization or SEO considers how search engines work and how a particular topic is searched, and the top keywords that people search for.
Google, and all other search engines rank a website through “natural” or through organic or algorithmic search results. This is totally different from search engine marketing (SEM), where website publisher pays for a certain amount to search engines to have their website included in any search. Google makes this possible through a program they call Google AdWords.
