You can post anything that you want to tell the world. While there exist no rules in terms of blogging, there are practical tips in posting to make sure that you make your blog appealing to both visitors and search engines. After all, your blog represents you. Whether you like it or not, you will be judged by your visitors by the way you present your blog.
1. Use headings and sub headings
Reading from a computer screen tires the eyes three times as much as reading from a physical paper. Internet users don’t read, they skim and scan, and pause to digest some words, and then move on to the next. Breaking your posts in paragraph, outlined with bold headings and subheadings will make it easy for readers to find what they are looking for. Take this article as an example.
2. Understand basic HTML
You can publish your posts without touching the codes. But there are times when you need to illustrate something with the help of tables, headings (written for search engines), hierarchy on bullet lists, link to email, and some other functions that is not permitted on your visual editor. With basic HTML, you will have more control of your posts.
3. Edit and Proofread
Every time you write an article, make sure that you edit and proofread before publishing your post. As mentioned previously, your blog represents you. Grammar and spelling errors make a lousy page and you will find it hard to convince your readers when you can’t even present a well written article. Proofreading is checking for punctuations, spacing, grammar and spelling errors while editing is checking for structures, transitions, consistency in style, and clarity.
4. Think first before you post
How would an average person react to what you are about to say on your article? Ranting is common in blogging. But use some wits to express yourself in such a way that it doesn’t sound offensive. Once you publish your article for the world to see, it’s hard to take it back.
5. Write frequently
If you can update your blog twice a day, search engines will love your blog for it. But don’t let quantity gets in the way of quality. Content is king when it comes to blogging.
In addition, writing frequently will definitely improve your skill. After a year or two, try to read your first posts and you will see great improvement on the way that you write articles.
6. Avoid using too much slang words
You wouldn’t know where your visitors will be coming from. Avoid using too much slang to make your posts comprehensible for everyone.
7. Encourage readers to interact with you and to anyone interested
Sometimes, the comments on blogs are more fun to read or more substantial than the post itself. People love to express their thoughts. When they see a blog filled with comments, they are enticed to write their own opinion, and they actually enjoy it.
8. Use pictures and videos
A picture is worth a thousand words. It makes your page interesting and alive. Just make sure that you resize the images to 600 pixels and below so that it doesn’t slow down your site.
